Technology is becoming more portable. It is also getting more expensive. The extra portability means we can take music everywhere with us, except where it is likely to get wet or dirty. The manufacturer’s solution to this problem is to offer “rugged” or “splash-proof” versions or products, usually for twice the price or with half the features.

The alternative is to buy a waterproof case to enclose your item, and seal out the water and dirt.This is a much cheaper solution and has many advantages. A good quality waterproof case allows you to use your camera or MP3 player whilst it is protected against water damage. What’s more, they make your device more than just “splash-proof”, many waterproof cases will allow you to take any brand of camera up to 6m underwater, and it will still work absolutely perfectly. They also add buoyancy, so your device will float to the surface if you drop it into something a bit deeper than a puddle.

If you have a good-quality waterproof case made of flexible plastic, you can use a phone whilst it is inside the case and you will still be able to hear the conversation well. For a camera case, it is essential that you use optically transparent plastic to avoid distorting your picture.
